Animation: The 12 Principles of Animation vs The 21 Foundations of Animation

The 12 Principles of animation, identified by Disney Animator's, Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas are commonly used to identify the key aspects of good animation practice. However, whilst these are absolutely fundamental to animation and animation learning, experienced animators will also recognise that there are variations, subcategories, and different ways to look at these principles. The 21 Foundations of Animation is a variation on the 12 Principles created by Dermot O'Connor which is designed to help students (and professionals) explore additional common animation techniques and situations.
